Embodiment 1

[0062] Add 1 gram of commercially available sericin to 100 ml of distilled water. The contents were stirred well until a clear solution was obtained. To this solution, 3 g of an aqueous solution of zinc nitrate hexahydrate was added. After this time, 1.5 grams of hexamine were added and the reaction mixture was heated to 70°C. Further autoclave at a pressure of 5.0 bar for 5 hours in a nitrogen atmosphere. Habit-modified zinc oxide crystals formed, filtered, washed with water and air dried.

[0063] A part of the product was calcined at 700°C for 2 hours. The uncalcined and calcined products were subjected to various tests as described below.

Embodiment 2

[0067] This example is the same as Example 1, except that 1 gram of sericin is replaced by 1 gram of BSA.

Embodiment 3

[0069] This example is the same as Example 1, except that 1 gram of lysozyme is used instead of 1 gram of sericin.

[0070] In all the above cases, ie Examples 1, 2 and 3, the crystals were disc-shaped and in the form of spherical aggregates with an average size of 1.2 μm, each disc having a thickness of 20 nm and an average diameter of 300 nm.

[0071] Antibacterial / Bactericidal Activity

[0072] A water stock solution of zinc oxide (1% w / v) was prepared. 100 μl of this solution was mixed with 900 μl of saline (0.85% NaCl) solution. In this way, the activity level of the modified zinc oxide was maintained at 0.1% w / v. Then, cultures of bacteria (S. aureus ATCC 6538)) and (E. coli ATCC 10536) as shown in the table below were added to the saline solution containing the zinc oxide of the present invention.

[0073] Samples were incubated at 37°C for 2 / 4 / 6 / 24 hours. After incubation, samples were diluted with saline (1:10) and plated on trypticase soy peptone agar for enume...

Abstract

Disclosed is habit modified crystals of zinc oxide comprising entrapped particles of protein, wherein said crystals are shaped like a disc and are in the form of spherical assemblies of average size 0.8 [mu]m to 1.5 [mu]m and where the thickness of each disc is 10 nm to 30 nm and average diameter is 200 nm to 500 nm wherein said protein is water-soluble and wherein said protein is at least one ofsericin, bovine serum albumin, gelatin, egg-albumin, casein, zein, whey or lysozyme. Also disclosed is process of making habit modified crystals of zinc oxide comprising the steps of: (i) mixing aqueous solution of a water-soluble protein with aqueous solution of a non- hydrolysable water-soluble zinc salt wherein said protein is water-soluble and wherein said protein is at least one of sericin, bovine serum albumin, gelatin, egg- albumin, casein, zein, whey or lysozyme; (ii) adding a weak base thereto; (iii) heating the reaction mixture of step (ii) to attain a temperature of 60 to 90 DEG C;and, (iv) filtering the contents of step (iii), washing the residue with water and drying it to obtain said habit modified crystals of zinc oxide as the filtrate.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the synthesis and application of habit-modified zinc oxide crystals. Background technique [0002] Zinc oxide is a potent bacteriostatic agent, ie it inhibits the growth of bacteria on substrates or in culture medium, but it has no appreciable bactericidal activity. Zinc oxide is known for its photoluminescence and photocatalytic activity. [0003] Zinc oxide crystals exist in the form of hexagonal rods of different sizes. Recent publications have shown that the three-dimensional structures of ZnO constitute the largest group, and this includes nanorods, needles, helices, springs, rings, ribbons, tubes, rings, wires, and combs, Dandelion, snowflake, needle and sea urchin. ZnO is also available in 2D structures such as nanoplates / nanosheets and nanoparticles. Examples of one-dimensional structures include nanorods and nanowires. [0004] Zinc oxide has been the subject of several patents and research articles coveri...
