Embodiment Construction

[0019] Exemplary embodiments relate to ophthalmic devices such as IOLs and contact lenses. The following description is provided to enable any person of ordinary skill in the art to make and use the invention, and is provided in the context of a patent application and its claims. Various modifications to the exemplary embodiments, and general principles and features described herein will be readily apparent. The exemplary embodiments have been described primarily in terms of specific methods and systems presented in the detailed description. However, these methods and systems will operate effectively in other embodiments. For example, the methods and systems are described primarily in relation to IOLs. However, the methods and systems can be used with contact lenses. Phrases such as "exemplary embodiment," "one embodiment," and "another embodiment" can refer to the same or different embodiments, as well as to multiple embodiments. The embodiments will be described with res...

Abstract

A method and system that provides an ophthalmic device. The ophthalmic device includes an ophthalmic lens having an anterior surface, a posterior surface, and at least one diffractive structure comprising a plurality of regions. The at least one diffractive structure is for at least one of the front surface and the rear surface. Each zone includes at least one echelette with at least one step height. The step height(s) are optimized for each zone individually. To compensate for eye chromatic aberration from distance to vision range, phase step heights greater than 2[pi] can be employed and the step height(s) folded into phases that are integer multiples of two times π. Therefore, the chromatic aberration of the eyes can be compensated to improve vision from far to near.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to intraocular lenses, and more particularly to an intraocular lens with zone-by-zone step height control. Background technique [0002] An intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted in a patient's eye to replace or supplement the patient's lens. An IOL may be implanted to replace the patient's lens during cataract surgery. Alternatively, an IOL may be implanted in the patient's eye to augment the optical power of the patient's own lens. [0003] Some conventional IOLs are monofocal IOLs, while others are multifocal IOLs. A monofocal IOL has a single focal length or power. Objects at the focal distance of the eye / IOL are sharp, while objects closer or further away may be blurred. Although objects are only in focus when they are in focus, objects within the depth of focus (within a certain distance from the focal length) are still acceptably in focus for the patient to consider in focus. A multifocal IOL has at lea...
