Embodiment Construction

[0024] A multi-layer display system includes multiple separate display screens (also referred to as display layers or display panels). As described in the above-incorporated patent applications, a viewer may view a composite image of a scene on a multi-layer display system. The composite image is the visual appearance to the viewer of the individual images of the various parts of the scene displayed on the various display screens of the multilayer display system. Multi-layer displays can provide the viewer with the effect of depth through the subtle creation of content across two or more stacked displays. These displays are currently useful in a vehicle's dashboard center stack and / or instrument cluster, where they can provide true or near-real 3D representations of dials, gauges, sliders, menus, switches, and the like. However, the multilayer display described in this disclosure is not limited to the above-mentioned applications.

[0025] In many uses, multilayer displays a...

Abstract

A multi-layered display including an upper display screen, and a lower display screen arranged so as to at least partially overlap with the upper display screen is described. An antiglare layer is disposed on the upper display screen. The antiglare layer includes a diffraction pattern configured to blur ambient reflections without substantially affecting transmitted light. The diffraction patternmay have a quarter wavelength thickness. A method for forming the multi-layered display is also provided.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to displays, and more particularly to display systems and methods for displaying images on multilayer displays. [0002] An important quality criterion for any display is the readability of the displayed content. Readability is essential for optimal performance of any display, and it is generally desired that the displayed content be read clearly, quickly and comfortably without eye strain. Glare can be a significant detrimental factor in any display if not handled properly. As used herein, glare refers to viewing difficulties in the presence of intense external light (such as direct or reflected natural light, eg, sunlight) or artificial (eg, halogen lights) light. Anti-glare (AG) coatings are commonly applied to displays in order to reduce glare and thereby provide a better view of the displayed image. [0003] Many anti-glare techniques use diffusion to break up externally generated light that is reflec...
