Embodiment Construction

[0014] Techniques for connecting using geographic phone numbers are described. In general, a phone number refers to a set of characters that can be used to initiate a communication with a particular resource. According to various implementations, the techniques described herein enable various policies related to the use of phone numbers at different locations. For example, certain regulatory policies may state that certain geo-specific phone numbers (eg, numbers with certain area codes) are not allowed to be used outside of defined geographic areas. Thus, techniques for connecting using a geographic phone number enable client devices located outside of the geographic phone number's allowed geographic area to connect calls using a non-geographic phone number, while routing the call using a geographic phone number.

[0015] The use of the term "phone number" herein should not be construed as limiting, and it should be appreciated that a "phone number" may refer to an Any strin...

Abstract

Techniques for connectivity using a geographic phone number are described. According to various implementations, techniques described herein enable various policies pertaining to the use of telephonenumbers at different locations to be enforced. For instance, techniques described herein enable a client device that is outside of a permitted geographic area for a geographic phone number to use a non-geographic phone number to connect a call, while the call can be routed using the geographic phone number.

Description

Background technique [0001] Today's mobile devices provide users with a wealth of portable functionality. For example, smart phones, tablet computers, laptop computers, etc. enable users to perform a variety of different tasks without being tied to a particular location. The ability to conduct various types of communication in mobile scenarios is particularly useful. For example, mobile devices often include functionality for different types of communications with other devices and / or services, such as voice calls, video calls, messaging, and the like. Accordingly, users may utilize mobile devices to communicate with other users via a variety of different modes of communication. [0002] While mobile devices enable communication in a variety of scenarios, there are challenges in continuing to enable users to communicate via a particular device as the user moves between geographic locations.
