Embodiment Construction

[0015] This article discusses foldable displays with rigid supports. A foldable display consists of multiple layers. The topmost or outermost layer is the outer covering lens made of, for example, plastic or hardcoat laminate. An optically clear adhesive bonds the cover lens to the display layer. The display layer is a laminate with thin-film electronics and coatings, and creates the display that users see when looking at a foldable display. The adhesive bonds the display layer to the support layer. The support layer is a hard support layer that, despite the foldable nature of the display, provides support for higher layers (eg, display layer and cover lens). The support layer material may be, for example, metal, glass, ceramic or a composite material.

[0016] Given the foldable nature of the display, there is usually an area under part of the display where the hinge system exists. In the event of pressure being applied to the cover lens (for example, by a user touching ...

Abstract

The invention discloses a display stack, a computing device and a method for generating a foldable display. The foldable display has a plurality of layers including at least one display layer that creates the display seen by a user while viewing the foldable display; and a hard support layer providing support for the display layer despite the display having foldable properties, and an adhesive layer that bonds the display layer to the hard support layer. The stiffness of the hard support layer is at least six times greater than the stiffness of the adhesive layer and at least six times greaterthan the stiffness of the display layer. Considering the collapsible properties of the display, there is typically a hinge system below the portion of the display. In the case where pressure is applied to the foldable display (e.g., by a user's finger or stylus), the stiffness of the hard support layer can prevent damage to the display despite the presence of the hinge system.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a display stack, a computing device and a method for producing a foldable display. Background technique [0002] As technology has advanced, computing devices have become increasingly mobile. For example, cordless phones, tablets, and smart watches have become increasingly common. In order to increase the screen size of some devices while in use, some devices are implementing foldable displays. While these foldable displays do come with larger display sizes, they're not without their issues. One such problem is that the hinge system in the device typically allows the device including the display to be folded, but does not provide sufficient support for the display itself. This makes the foldable display discontinuous and poorly operated, leading to user frustration and dissatisfaction with their device. Contents of the invention [0003] This Summary presents a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are f...
