[0004] This generates unnecessary network traffic and results in high latency and low throughput, which can significantly degrade the performance of applications running on the hypervisor
In general, this performance degradation occurs whenever any two VMs are two different IP subnets communicating with each other

Embodiment Construction

[0058] In the following description, numerous details are set forth for purposes of explanation. However, one of ordinary skill in the art will recognize that the present invention may be practiced without the use of these specific details. In other instances, well-known structures and devices are shown in block diagram form in order not to obscure the description of the invention with unnecessary detail.

[0059] To facilitate L3 packet forwarding between virtual machines (VMs) of a logical network running on a host machine in a virtualized network environment, some embodiments define a logical router or logical routing element (LRE) for the logical network. In some embodiments, the LRE operates distributedly across its logical network's host machines as a Virtual Distributed Router (VDR), where each host machine operates its own local instance of the LRE as a Managed Physical Routing Element (MPRE). ) to perform L3 packet forwarding for VMs running on that host. In some em...

Abstract

The invention relates to a logical router. Some embodiments provide a system that includes several host machines for hosting several virtual machines and a physical network for interconnecting the host machines. Each host machine includes a managed physical switching element (MPSE) including several ports for performing link layer forwarding of packets to and from a set of virtual machines runningon the host machine. Each port is associated with a unique media access control (MAC) address. Each host machine includes a managed routing element (MPRE) for receiving a data packet from a port of the MPSE and performing network layer routing in order to forward the received data packet from a first virtual machine of a first network segment to a second virtual machine of a second network segment.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of an invention patent application with an application date of October 10, 2014, an application number of 201480056094.2, and an invention title of "logic router". technical field [0002] The present disclosure generally relates to logical routers. Background technique [0003] In a network virtualization environment, one of the more common applications deployed on a hypervisor is a 3-tier application, where the network tier, database tier, and application tier are on different L3 subnets. This requires IP packets that traverse one virtual machine (VM) in one subnet to another VM in another subnet to first reach the L3 router and then be forwarded to the destination VM. This is the case even if the destination VM is hosted on the same host machine as the originating VM. [0004] This generates unnecessary network traffic and results in higher latency and lower throughput, which significantly reduces the performance of app...
