A technical solution for suppressing the associated scaling to reduce wheel imbalance in steering systems is described. An example method includes using a wheel speed signal to determine wheel speed energy. The method also includes determining that the wheel speed energy is greater than a predetermined energy threshold, and in response, adjusting the wheel speed signal and calculating a wheel imbalance reduction using the adjusted wheel speed signal. The method also includes, upon determining that the wheel speed energy is not greater than a predetermined energy threshold, and in response, calculating a wheel imbalance reduction using the wheel signal without any adjustments. The method also includes using the wheel imbalance reduction to calculate a motor torque command for generating a corresponding amount of torque at the hand-held steering wheel.
