Embodiment Construction

[0039] figure 1 An exemplary optical communication system is schematically shown, indicated with reference numeral 1 . The optical system 1 may for example be a WDM optical system. The optical communication system 1 comprises a first source node and a second source node respectively connected to a first destination node and a second destination node, the first source node comprises a first transmitter 11, and the second source node comprises a second transmitter 12. The first destination node includes a first receiver 21, and the second destination node includes a second receiver 22. The connection between the source node and the destination node is realized through an optical communication network 30, which includes one or more intermediate nodes connected by optical fibers. For example, figure 1 The optical communication network 30 includes three intermediate nodes 31 , 32 , 33 . Each intermediate node may eg comprise a switch and / or an optical amplifier and / or one or mo...

Abstract

It is described a method for monitoring an optical communications system comprising at least one optical channel connecting a transmitter and a receiver. The method comprises: measuring, at the receiver, a transmission parameter of the optical channel for a pre-defined measuring time interval; on the basis of the measurements of the transmission parameter in the time interval, checking the presence of at least one anomaly in the measurements, the at least one anomaly being indicative of a subsequent failure of the system; and in the presence of the at least one anomaly, applying an identification algorithm to the measurements, the algorithm comprising a classifier, wherein the classifier is configured to, on the basis of the measurements, identify a cause of the failure, the classifier being based on a machine learning technique.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to the field of optical communication systems. In particular, the invention relates to the field of methods for monitoring optical communication systems. Background technique [0002] It is well known that in optical communication systems different types of faults can occur which can degrade the signal quality at the receiver. [0003] The different types of failures can be divided into two categories: so-called "hard failures" which occur in a completely unexpected and unpredictable manner and are caused by sudden events such as fiber optic cable breaks, while so-called due to gradual degradation of signal quality and may be caused, for example, by misalignment of cascaded filters along the optical link, or by failure of one or more optical amplifiers. Signal quality degradation associated with soft faults may occur gradually over relatively long timescales (hours or days). In particular, soft faults can cause abnormal BER val...
