Embodiment Construction

[0014] will now refer to figure 1 The first embodiment will be described. figure 1 A cellular telecommunication network 1 with a base station 10 and a coverage area 15 is illustrated. figure 1 Also illustrated is a road network having (in this example) three roads A, B, C, all of which are at least partially within the coverage area 15 of the base station 10 . A first fleet 20 and a second fleet 30 of vehicles travel along road B and road C respectively. figure 1 Also illustrated is a new vehicle 40 that is not a member of the first team 20 and the second team 30 , entering the coverage area 15 of the base station 10 along the road A. As shown in FIG.

[0015] The cellular telecommunication network 1 comprises a radio access network (RAN) and a core network 50 . The RAN includes a base station 10 (and possibly one or more other base stations) and a local formation cache 60 . The local formation cache 60 stores data related to all formations within the coverage area of th...

Abstract

This invention provides a method for platooning a vehicle in a cellular telecommunications network, and a platoon server for implementing said method, the cellular telecommunications network includinga first access network, the first radio access network including a first local platoon server, the cellular telecommunications network further including a core network having a central platoon server, the method comprising the steps of: the central platoon server storing data relating to a first vehicle platoon, the first vehicle platoon located in a first geographical region associated with thefirst radio access network; the central platoon server sending the data relating to the first vehicle platoon to the first local platoon server; the first local platoon server receiving a request froma vehicle to join a platoon; and, in response, the first local platoon server identifying the first vehicle platoon.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method of platooning vehicles and a system for realizing the method. Background technique [0002] Future cellular networks are expected to support platoons of autonomous vehicles. Platooning is a situation where multiple autonomously driven vehicles with a common route cooperate via wireless communication to drive as a group of vehicles traveling closely together. Vehicles may have an improved driving experience by operating in a platoon, such as by improving overall fuel efficiency through improved aerodynamics of the individual vehicles following the lead vehicle. Initial studies on vehicle formations utilize vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, whereby vehicles can exchange data related to their formation availability and their operating parameters. The lead vehicle usually acts as the master vehicle / controller, and all vehicles following the lead vehicle will act as slave vehicles. However, this limits vehicles to ...
