The optimal selection method comprises the following steps: determining the economical cost of pipelines according to the pipeline construction period cost and the pipeline operation period cost; determining the safety cost of the pipeline according to economic loss, personnel health loss, environment loss and reputation loss caused by the accident of the pipeline; determining the reliability cost of the pipeline according to the pipeline transportation income loss of the pipeline and the contract compensation cost; and determining a pipeline design scheme in the plurality of natural gas long-distance pipeline design schemes according to the economical cost, the safety cost and the reliability cost by utilizing a machine learning algorithm. According to the method, the defect that only economy is considered in comparison and selection of an existing natural gas long-distance pipeline design scheme is overcome, factors and indexes such as economy, safety and system reliability are comprehensively considered, and a more comprehensive natural gas long-distance pipeline engineering design scheme comprehensive evaluation system and a comprehensive index calculation method are provided.
