Restricting device access per session

The present invention is directed to restricting device access per session. Entries in a device list are configured to store session ID values in addition to values for other device properties. A session ID value for a device can be set to the session ID value of a (e.g., RDP) session that registered the device such that the subsequent transfer of device related information for the device can be restricted to processes in the session. When a request for device related information is received from a process, an access check is performed by at least comparing a session ID value for the process to a session ID value stored in a device entry for the device. When the access check is successful, for example, when session ID values match, access to the requested device related information can be permitted.

Creation and use of virtual device drivers on a serial bus

A node on a serial bus, preferably a device such as a personal computer (PC), can emulate other devices using virtual device drivers. A PC connected to a 1394 bus exposes its CROM on the bus which presents an image to other nodes on the 1394 bus and describes the functional units supported by the node. The CROM can be changed dynamically by adding unit directories to the CROM detailing peripherals connected to the PC. The PC can then be enumerated as the connected device by other PCs on the bus. The PC can emulate or morph itself into any desired device or even multiple devices at the same time. The invention also allows a PC to create devices that don't yet exist on the bus. The invention allows a user to create virtual device objects with device properties to have just in case a user plugs the particular device in to the PC.

Method for analyzing and characterizing the usage pattern of a device

The present invention provides a method to analysis information collected in the form of a unique set of data that contains the operations of a device over a period of time. In this system, there is a can be a central or distributed depository of the statuses of all designated device attributes of a device including the past state history of the device. Each device on the system will transmit a state change notification to the central location each time the status of the device changes. This status change will be recorded in the central location storage. In the method of the present invention, analytical techniques are developed and applied to recorded data of the device status history. The analytical techniques can analyze the recorded data and produce a use pattern for a particular device based on the recorded information about the device. The first step in this method is to record status change information for a device. The next step is to formulate a query of the recorded data for a device. This query can include a particular characteristic of the data such as the amount of time the device is in the 'on' state during a predetermined time period. The third step is to apply analytical techniques to the data in accordance with the formulated query to get the desired information and results. These results could be part of a report on the operations of the device. The obtained information could be used to develop systems that will have a more efficient of device and appliances on the system.
