Embodiment approach

[0029] The present disclosure relates to compositions comprising medium chain triglycerides and methods comprising administering these compositions to animals to provide health benefits. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to compositions comprising medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), and in some aspects, optionally including isoflavones, l-carnitine, conjugated linoleic acid, astaxanthin or arginine. The present disclosure also relates to methods of treating obesity in animals by administering the MCT compositions of the invention to the animals in need thereof.

[0030] The present inventors have discovered that the MCT compositions of the present invention can treat obesity and provide other health benefits in animals. Such compositions may also provide a variety of health benefits, including: maintaining lean body mass during weight loss in animals, preventing or minimizing loss of lean body mass, preventing reductions in energy metabolism in animals, reducin...

Embodiment 1

[0048] Example 1 - Dog Study

[0049] Thirty dogs were used in this study. Fifteen dogs were fed a diet containing 5.5% MCTs (with 55% C8 and 45% C10) at 100% MER (C8C10 MCT group) for two weeks while 15 dogs were given 100% MER Dogs were fed a diet containing 5.5% C10 MCT (C10MCT group) for two weeks. Blood beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) levels were measured on study day 1, while each dog's body weight was recorded at baseline and at the end of the second week. BHB levels are provided in Table 1.

[0050] Table 1

[0051]

[0052] The results in Table 1 show that dogs in the C8C10 MCT group had much higher blood BHB than dogs in the C10 MCT group, indicating that dogs were able to convert most of the C8 MCT into ketone bodies, while most of the C10 MCT was not metabolized into Ketone bodies. As a result of metabolic differences between C8 and C10 MCTs, dogs in the C8C10 MCT group lost 1.06% of their body weight over two weeks, while dogs in the C10 group gained 0.7% o...

Abstract

A method for weight loss comprising orally administering a composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of medium chain triglycerides to the animal, where the medium chain triglycerides include caprylic acid.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 62 / 855,050, filed May 31, 2019, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] Obesity is the most common nutritional disease in companion pets such as dogs and cats; surpassing by far all deficiency diseases combined. Generally, obesity is considered present when a companion pet's body weight is 15% or more above an optimal value, which is the point at which health problems begin to increase with weight gain. For example, obese and overweight animals are at increased risk of many chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, dyslipidemia, certain types of cancer, apnea and osteoarthritis. Obesity rates in companion pets increase with age. Similar to humans, as animals age, body fat increases and the amount of lean body mass decreases. [0004] As obesity ...
