The method comprises the steps that: a semantic vector is obtained according to an RGB image of the cover of a to-be-retrieved book , and the category of the to-be-retrieved book is obtained according to the semantic vector; according to the grey-scale image of the cover of the to-be-retrieved book, a character gradient magnitude image and a character gradient direction quantization image are obtained; the RGB image of the cover of the to-be-retrieved book is input, the character gradient magnitude image and the character gradient direction quantization image into a metric learning network of the category of the to-be-retrieved book to obtain an embedded vector of the cover of the to-be-retrieved book; and according to the embedded vector of the cover of the to-be-retrieved book, a low-dimensional projection point of the cover of the to-be-retrieved book is obtained, and the low-dimensional projection point of the cover of the to-be-retrieved book is matched with the low-dimensional projection point of a book cover in a category database to obtain a retrieval result of the book to be retrieved.
