Embodiment 1

[0110] Example 1. Mitochondrial Fragmentation in Keratinocytes - UV Study

[0111] The aim of this experiment was to compare the extent to which different active substances protect the skin from mitochondrial fragmentation, which is caused by aging with or without UV exposure.

[0112] The higher the mitochondrial fragmentation value, the less protective the skin is for a given active or combination of actives. Note that for biological systems such as mitochondria that are microscale components of skin cells, the absolute value of the mitochondrial fragmentation value is small, and small differences can be significant.

[0113] The effects of B3 and low levels of SAMe on mitochondrial fragmentation in keratinocytes 3 days before and 4 days after UV exposure are shown in the table below:

[0114] Table 1

[0115]

[0116] a Significantly better than the control not exposed to UV (P< / =0.05)

[0117] b Significantly better than B3 alone (P< / =0.05)

Abstract

The present invention provides topical personal care compositions for improving cellular energy efficiency by protecting the skin from mitochondrial fragmentation occurring in an aged individual in need thereof. The present invention also provides the use of a topical personal care composition comprising nicotinamide and S-adenosine-L-methionine. The invention also provides the use of nicotinamide and S-adenosine-L-methionine in the preparation of a topical personal care composition for reducing or preventing mitochondrial fragmentation in skin cells and for increasing skin cell energy.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to topical compositions comprising a synergistic combination of niacinamide and S-adenosyl-L-methionine, useful for combating mitochondrial fragmentation in skin cells. Background technique [0002] As consumers desire to look younger by reducing the appearance of facial lines, wrinkles and blemishes on their skin, they find it desirable to provide skin benefits by methods that rely on the application of topical compositions. There is a constant search for active ingredients for incorporation into topical compositions that provide skin benefits to the consumer. There is a continuing need to incorporate active ingredients into topical compositions that provide skin benefits by preserving the integrity and function of cellular components. [0003] However, the technology to harness the functional components of cells to achieve youthfulness or to feel youthful by appearance is uncertain. While this is true in all cells of t...
