Abstract

A transmission system, includes a transmitter (4) which is coupled with a receiver (6) by a transmission channel (10). The transmitter (4) contains a channel encoder (28), for encoding a source symbol into a encoding symbol. The receiver (6) contains the channel encoder (28), for rebuilding source symbol from the signal received by the transmission channel. According to the invention, the transmitter includes separate encoder for encoding the code characteristic used in a channel encoder (14) and transmitts it to the receiver (6). The receiver (6) is used to receive encoded code characteristic fron a transmission medium, and separate channel encoder (26) is used to code encoded code characteristic. The code characteristic provided by separate channel encoder (26) is tranmitted to a set device (27) of channel encoder (28) to set the code characteristic of channel encoder (28).
