The optimization problem involves a plurality of variables, each variable taking either a first value or a second value, the plurality of variables being grouped into a plurality of groups, any given one of the plurality of groups being constrained: a precisely predetermined number of variables belonging to a given group taking said second value, the optimization apparatus performs an optimization calculation on a first variable among variables belonging to a selected group selected from the plurality of groups to obtain an approximate solution satisfying a constraint, and estimates and removes a variable that is less likely to take a second value in an optimal solution based on the approximate solution, thereby retaining the second variable in each selected group, the optimization calculation is re-performed after updating the first variable with the second variable and a third variable belonging to the at least one unselected group.
