Embodiment Construction

[0016] figure 1 The biometric authentication system shown has a portable data carrier 1 inserted into an input / output device 2 (I / O device) connected to a control and data processing unit 3 . The control and data processing unit 3 is also connected to sensors 4 for detecting biometric features. In addition, the control and data processing unit 3 is also equipped with a keyboard, display and is connected to a basic data system, such as by telephone connection or network connection. Since they are not essential to the understanding of the invention, in figure 1 The latter elements are not shown. The totality of the I / O device 2, the control and data processing unit 3 and the sensor 4 is usually referred to as a terminal. The I / O device 2, the control and data processing unit 3 and the sensor 4 can form a structural unit.

[0017] As shown, the sensor 4 may detect, for example, a biometric feature of the eye, such as the iris. As mentioned above, however, sensors that detect...

Abstract

The invention relates to devices and a method for biometric authentication, using reference data which has been stored in a memory of a portable data carrier. In order to help biometric authentication methods make the final breakthrough in terms of greater distribution, a standardised creation of reference data is required for the respective biometric characteristics which are used for authentication purposes. Algorithms for creating the reference data have hitherto been used by different suppliers of methods and devices for biometric authentication; this usually leads to the creation of different, non-interchangeable reference data. The use of the biometric method is thus limited to the system of the respective supplier. The invention avoids this problem by storing several sets of biometric reference data, thus increasing the probability that at least one set of stored biometric reference data can be evaluated. The desired system-independent authentication can thus be achieved.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a device and method for biometric authentication using reference data stored in a portable data carrier. Background technique [0002] Apparatus and methods for biometric authentication are known which include the determination of unique characteristics such as determination of retinal, iris, voice, facial features, fingerprints and signatures with detection of dynamic properties at the time of signing. Known methods for biometric authentication are firstly limited in their generalization and application by the high cost of the sensors used to detect biometric features. However, new developments have made sensors suitable for applications such as fingerprint sensors made of semiconductor materials, achieving cost-utility feasibility. [0003] US Patent No. 4993068 discloses, for example, an identification system in which several biometric characteristics can be determined. [0004] Another system for detecting patterns, eg se...
