[0043] Preparation of trimethylisopropylbutanamide
[0044] Diisopropylpropionitrile (200 g) and triacetin (1000 g) were added to a 5 liter reactor equipped with a mechanical stirrer, condenser and heating mantle. The contents of the reactor were heated to 145°C. Dimethyl sulfate (344 g) was added to the reactor while methyl acetate was recovered. The reaction was continued until no methyl acetate was recovered. The reaction time is about 5 hours.
[0045] The contents of the reactor were then allowed to cool to room temperature and ethyl acetate was added to reduce the viscosity of the product. The batch was then decomposed to 25% caustic. The crude product was washed twice with brine. The crude product was then distilled.
[0046] The yield of the process of the present invention is about 70 mole percent, based on the molar amount of diisopropylpropionitrile added.
