Embodiment 1

[0043] Preparation of trimethylisopropylbutanamide

[0044] Diisopropylpropionitrile (200 g) and triacetin (1000 g) were added to a 5 liter reactor equipped with a mechanical stirrer, condenser and heating mantle. The contents of the reactor were heated to 145°C. Dimethyl sulfate (344 g) was added to the reactor while methyl acetate was recovered. The reaction was continued until no methyl acetate was recovered. The reaction time is about 5 hours.

[0045] The contents of the reactor were then allowed to cool to room temperature and ethyl acetate was added to reduce the viscosity of the product. The batch was then decomposed to 25% caustic. The crude product was washed twice with brine. The crude product was then distilled.

[0046] The yield of the process of the present invention is about 70 mole percent, based on the molar amount of diisopropylpropionitrile added.

Abstract

The invention relates to the manufacture of amide compounds provided through the reaction of nitrile compounds and a sulfate compound to form the related amide compound. In a preferred embodiment a diol or a triol is employed as a solvent, thereby increasing the yield of the product.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to amides, in particular to a new process for the manufacture of butanamide. Background of the invention [0002] US Patent Nos. 4,153,679 and 4,226,988, incorporated herein by reference, disclose the use of p-mentanes and acyclic amides as cooling effects on the skin and mucous membranes. These two patents disclose the preparation and isolation of the above-mentioned compounds by a three-step reaction process. These steps mainly involve the hydrolysis of the aforementioned compounds to acids. The acid product is then reacted with thionyl chloride to form the acid chloride. The acid chloride is then reacted with an alkylamine to form an amide. [0003] While this reaction is suitable for the preparation of amides, the process does not produce the desired product in a simple and economical manner. [0004] Therefore, there is a potential need for high-yield preparation of amides by simple and low-cost methods. Summ...
