Embodiment Construction

[0028] The prior art print cartridge 20 shown in Figure 1 includes a plastic body 22 having an ink reservoir for liquid ink. The cartridge body 22 has a nozzle 24 projecting downward. The print head is mounted on the underside of the nozzle 24 . The exposed portion of the printhead is the outer surface of the nozzle plate 26, which has small orifices 28 (two rows of orifices in this example) from which ink droplets are ejected to the printhead that travels through the printer and very close to the nozzle plate. medium.

[0029] On the side of the cartridge body 22, near the nozzle 24, there is provided a shaped part, such as an "L" shaped part 30 in FIG. 1 . These features provide datum or reference surfaces 32 on the cartridge body which engage corresponding features on the frame in the printer which carries the print cartridge. Figure 3 shows such a frame member 34 (which may constitute a datum hook) having a surface 36 which engages the datum surface 32 of a print cartri...

Abstract

A technique for handling residual ink left on the orifice plate (26, 128, 228) of an inkjet print cartridge from multiple printings. In a preferred embodiment, the inkjet printer cartridge is provided with an ink receiving material such as an absorbent pad (60, 260). The installation of the absorbent pad allows the service station wiper to scrape residual ink from the nozzle plate and distribute the residual ink along the absorbent pad. The pad absorbs ink. Ink that separates from the print cartridge basically goes into the absorbent pad. The outer surface of the absorbent pad dries quickly, so it is less likely to have bonded areas on the absorbent pad where fibers can bond and reduce print quality.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to inkjet print cartridges, and more particularly to the treatment of residual ink left on the exterior of the print cartridge from multiple printings. Background technique [0002] Inkjet printers have one or more print cartridges that contain ink in an ink reservoir. The ink storage chamber is connected with the print head installed on the main body of the print cartridge. The printhead has tiny holes from which small ink droplets are ejected onto a print medium, such as paper, that is conveyed in the printer. [0003] Many inkjet printers have a frame that mounts the print cartridge. As the print cartridge ejects ink onto the paper, the frame moves linearly across the width of the paper. Each time the frame spans the paper, the band or active print area can be covered with ink depending on the image or text to be printed. Between linear movements of the frame, the paper is moved forward to print the next swath of the image...
