Methods and apparatus for sampling and analyzing body fluid

A sampling device for sampling body fluid includes a lancet for making an incision, a capillary tube for drawing-up body fluid from the incision, and a test strip affixed to an upper end of the capillary tube for receiving the fluid. An absorbent pad can be disposed between the test strip and capillary tube for spreading-out the fluid being transferred to the test strip. An on-site analyzer such as an optical analyzer and / or an electrochemical analyzer can be mounted in the device for analyzing the fluid. Alternatively, a test strip can be slid through a slot formed in the bottom end of the device so that by passing the device against the skin after an incision has been formed, the test strip will directly contact body fluid emanating from the incision.

Simplified one-handed preemptive medical procedure site dressing to prevent sharps injuries and exposure to bloodborne pathogens

A dressing for use with medical procedures is provided that permits application of the dressing prior to the commencement of a medical procedure and wherein the dressing remains on the site after the procedure has been completed. The dressing comprises an absorbent pad, a hinged door and an aperture through which the procedure site can be accessed or it comprises an adhesive bandage part, which is bent and secured in such a way that the bandage forms a door and a hinge, and an adhesive flap component which anchors the bandage to the skin. The bandage is positioned in such a way as to infer or define the location where the procedure is to be performed. In either embodiment, when it is deployed, the door or bandage is rotated around the hinge and can be set in place at a procedure location prior to the procedure. Importantly, the device can be deployed with one hand, to complete the bandaging of a procedure site simultaneous with or within a moment after the completion of the medical procedure. The device is not size-limited by the disclosure. The invention may be small enough to use to perform an injection or it may be large enough that a major surgical procedure can be performed through the aperture. Methods of using the dressing of the present invention are also provided.

Surgical pad accounting system and method

In a surgical procedure absorbent pads, such as sterile gauze lap pads and sponges are used to absorb blood and other fluids. It is vital that none of the pads be left in the patient after the operation. To account for each pad and be certain none are left in the patient, each pad is marked with unique human readable alphanumeric character, for example each pad in its face is printed with one number from the numbers 1,2,3 . . . 10 or more.Similarly a container has pockets, each pocket being sealed on its top and two sides and with its top open. The surface of each pocket is marked with a alphanumeric human readable character, matching the characters on the pads. During ,or after the operation, each used pad is placed in its matching pocket i.e. pad “6” is placed in pocket “6”. A visual inspection reveals if any used pad is not in its matching packet which may indicate the pad has been incorrectly retained within the patient's body.

"blood sample collection apparatus and kits"

Blood sample collection apparatus and kits are devised as easy-to-use, reduced pain devices operable by persons not having medical training or other expertise or knowledge. A flexible strip having adhesives on two portions of a first side accommodate therebetween and absorbent pad and substrate with microstructures. The substrate includes microstructures arranged to gently penetrate or pierce skin and cause a small amount of blood to pass to the external surface of a user's flesh. An absorbent pad receives and absorbs a blood sample therein. The absorbent pad may additionally support a plurality of chemical agents which further advances mobility of blood in the collection system. These chemical agents may include anticoagulants and blood anticlotting agents to facilitate blood transfer from a donor to the absorbent pad. Additionally, these systems may also include a blood preservative to stabilize blood collected for an extended shipping and transfer period. These blood sample collection systems may further include a numbing agent to improve comfort of use.
