Embodiment Construction

[0042] A formula is a description of a set of methods used to calculate a result by applying an operator to one or more operands. Usually, in an algebraic sense, the operand is a variable. The present invention defines a formula as an operator description with respect to operands (variables). Specifically, variables and operators form a relationship. The simple formula X=A+B describes the relationship between the operands A and B and the addition operator (+). The present invention enables this to be represented graphically, which is desirable when representing complex models and functions. The invention also produces graphical representations of defined interrelationships. In other words, this interrelationship between variables and operators defines the formula.

[0043] The method of the present invention is performed using a Graphical Formula Definition Tool (GFDT) 12 . refer to figure 1 , GFDT 12 interacts with Graphical User Interface (GUI) 14 . The GUI 14 forms p...

Abstract

A computer-implemented method of graphically defining a formula, includes providing a first operator object for defining a method of manipulating at least one input to produce at least one result. A graphical representation of the first operator object is displayed. A variable object for containing data is provided. An input from a user to relate the variable object to one of inputs or one of the results of the first operator object is received. A graphical representation of the first variable object and its relation to the operator object is displayed. A logical description of the relationship between objects is recorded thereby defining the formula.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method of graphically representing defined formulas for manipulating input data to produce results. Preferably, the method is implemented in the form of a computer program. Background technique [0002] Usually complex operations on data involve many complex formulas. Such a model is often used to define formulas that provide multilevel schemes for representing data manipulations. It can be difficult to work out the formulas needed for each level in the model. It may also be helpful for this operation if the formula is represented and defined graphically. [0003] US Patent No. 4,901,221 to Kodosky et al. discloses a graphics system and method for modeling operations. The disclosed method enables a user to construct schematics using a block diagram editor such that the schematically created schematics show a procedural approach for achieving a certain result. When the user constructs the data flow diagram, machin...
