[0011] When a beam of light is directed at or near the annular limbus region that joins the cornea to the sclera, in addition to localized scattering, a continuous ring of light can be seen emanating from the limbus. This so-called limbal ring occurs with visible and infrared illumination, but also with monochromatic light (eg, laser or LED) and continuous spectrum (eg, slit beam of white light). The irradiated limbal ring must usually appear clearly when irradiating the area directly onto the limbus. The limbal ring can also be seen, but is considerably less distinct, by indirect illumination of the limbus through iris scattering or corneal fiber optic conduction.
