Methods and apparatus for deploying sheet-like materials

Implant delivery systems for delivering sheet-like implants include a delivery shaft, an implant expander, a sheath, and a sheet-like implant. In some embodiments, the delivery shaft has a proximal end and a distal end. The implant expander is mounted to the distal end of the delivery shaft. The implant expander includes a central portion and a plurality of leg portions radiating from the central portion. The implant expander is evertable between an unstressed configuration in which a distal surface of the implant expander defines a concave surface, and a first compact configuration in which the distal surface of the implant expander defines a convex surface. The implant expander has a first lateral extent when the implant expander is free to assume the unstressed configuration. The sheath defines a lumen having a lumen diameter. At least a portion of the delivery shaft is slidably disposed in the lumen. The lumen diameter is smaller than the first lateral extent of the implant expander so that the sheath holds the implant expander in the first compact configuration when slidably disposed therein. The sheet-like implant overlays at least a portion of the distal surface of the implant expander with portions of the sheet-like implant extending between the leg portions of the implant expander and the sheath. Methods of treating a rotator cuff of a shoulder are also disclosed.

A stent balloon is provided with two conductive rings, created by a thin metallized coating deposited directly on the balloon, adjacent to the ends of the stent. The impedance between those rings and the body of the patient is measured at different AC frequencies. As the balloon approaches the vessel wall the impedance increases rapidly. Once the balloon forms full contact with vessel wall the impedance increases slowly. The changing impedance provides a guide for optimal apposition of the stent. The same conductive rings can also detect stent slippage and stent position relative to the balloon. With the addition of an extra conductive pad and wire, stent spring-back can be measured and corrected for.

Ablation probe with ribbed insulated sheath

A tissue ablation probe comprises an electrically conductive probe shaft, at least one electrode, and an electrically insulative sheath disposed on the probe shaft. The insulative sheath has thickened regions forming alternating ribs and depressions that longitudinally extend along the probe shaft. The ribs allow the ablation probe to be delivered through a tightly toleranced delivery device. While the ribs may shear off during the delivery process, the underlying probe shaft will remain covered by the remaining portion of the insulative sheath. The tissue ablation probe may be used in a tissue ablation assembly that additionally comprises a delivery cannula having a lumen in which the tissue ablation probe may be removably disposed. In this case, the sheath has an outer periphery having a size substantially the same as the diameter of the lumen, so that the inner surface of the delivery cannula cooperates with the depressions to create lumens that longitudinally extend within the cannula.

Method and instrumentation for control of stem cell injection into the body

InactiveUS20050226855A1Decreased cell growthSimple methodBiocideBalloon catheterLumen DiameterRepair tissue
A method is described for repairing tissue of a selected organ from among heart, brain, liver, pancreas, kidney, and glands in a patient's body. In the method, stem cells that have the capability to repair tissue of the selected organ are intraluminally applied through a designated natural body vessel or duct leading to a predetermined target site of the tissue of the selected organ to be repaired. The stem cells are delivered into the respective vessel or duct through a catheter having a proximal portion of relatively larger central lumen diameter and outer diameter, and a distal portion of relatively smaller central lumen diameter and outer diameter, the two portions being integral with one another so that stem cells delivered into the central lumen of the proximal portion will flow through and exit the central lumen of the distal portion, the lumen diameter and length of each of the two portions being selected to minimize the pressure drop across the catheter during flow of the stem cells.
