Embodiment Construction

[0014] Figure 1 shows in block diagram a typical process for forming a continuous fiber and metal matrix composite consisting of a combination of monofilament fibers and matrix metal in foil, powder, or wire form. In block 2, the mandrel is prepared for winding. Thereafter, the fibers and metal elements are rolled onto the mandrel (block 4), and the mandrel and the assembly rolled thereon are then packaged within the processing hardware in a manner well known to those skilled in the art (block 6) . The rolled assembly packaged on the mandrel is then degassed to remove binder and other volatiles (block 8), and the assembly is cured to remove voids and bonded interfaces (block 10). Thereafter, the final reinforced component is formed (block 12).

[0015] FIG. 2 shows the method steps within block 4 of FIG. 1 for a ring component in which a wire and fiber assembly is coiled within an annular recess 14 of a mandrel or base 16 . The coiled assembly includes a selected or predete...

Abstract

A method of retaining composite preforms in the nature of fiber / metal matrix composites in position during processing, comprising the steps of positioning a predetermined assembly of fibers and metal matrix on a mandrel. The metal matrix may be in the form of wires, powder or foil. A retaining wire of a suitable heat resistant metal, such as titanium is spirally wound under tension over the fiber / metal matrix assembly to retain the assembly in a predetermined position on the mandrel during subsequent processing.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to synthetic preforms for forming continuous fiber and metal matrix composites, and more particularly, to a method for holding the synthetic preforms in place during processing. Background technique [0002] Synthetic preforms such as those used to form continuous fiber and metal matrix composites include a combination of monofilament fibers and matrix metal in foil, powder or wire form. For example, these compositions can be used to make a ring or rod. In either case, the fibers and metal of the product precursor are rolled on a mandrel to form the reinforced region. For example, in the case of rings, this can be accomplished by rolling the assembly of wire and fibers on an annular, concave base or mandrel to form the composition. In the case of rods, a prepreg sheet is first produced consisting of a layer of fibers and a layer of wire bonded together by an adhesive. The prepreg sheet is then rolled on a cylindrical mandrel t...
