[0023] Related US Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 130,328 (hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety) describes in detail a patented method and system for downloading programming objects to set-top terminals in a cable system. figure 1 is a flow chart illustrating the basic sequence in which a set-top terminal obtains a programming object in a cable system according to the method. Figure 2 is a block diagram illustrating the basic elements of a cable television system using the present invention.

[0024] refer to figure 1 As in FIG. 2, the set-top terminal (202; FIG. 2) performs an auto-start process immediately after being powered on. Such as figure 1 As shown, the start-up process begins with the execution of a program called a start-up code (100) by the set-top terminal. The boot code is a programming object that is loaded into the read-only memory (ROM) of the set-top terminal at the time of manufacture. As with all programs executed by the set top terminal (2...

Abstract

A method and system for managing and controlling the downloading of programs, that is, coded objects, to a set-top terminal connected to a cable TV, thereby preventing malfunctions or compatibility with existing application programs when only part of the specified coded objects are successfully downloaded. A possible interruption of service due to a conflict. When a message listing two or more new or additional encoded objects to be downloaded, the set-top terminal starts and executes the downloaded object only if all of the listed objects are successfully received. If only some of the objects instructed to be downloaded are received by the terminal, those downloaded objects will be cleared or stored in memory without being started or executed and the system operator may specify in the message instructing the terminal to obtain new objects, regardless of the enumerated Whether objects are executed as a group. The system operator can simply specify whether objects from incomplete downloads are purged from memory.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to the field of programming and reprogramming of set-top terminals in cable television systems. In particular, the invention relates to the field of controlling the downloading of programs, such as operating systems or native serial objects, which program set-top terminals for initialization or upgrading of the set-top terminals on a cable network. Background of the invention [0002] In a typical cable television system, subscribers are equipped with set-top boxes or terminals. A set-top box is an electronic device box used to connect a user's television and possibly other electronic devices to a wired network. The set-top box is usually connected to the wired network through a coax wall outlet. [0003] A set-top box is essentially a computer that is programmed to process signals from a cable network in order to provide cable services to users. The services of these cable companies usually include access to many TV...
