Embodiment Construction

[0043] Figure 2-4 An apparatus of the invention is shown performing cataract removal according to the invention. First, the area surrounding the lens 20 is exposed to a field of pressurized air from a pressurized air source 102 . Subsequently, if figure 2 As shown, manipulate a thermal cutting tool 110 ( Figure 5 This tool is also shown in , and will be described in detail below), through an incision in the cornea 16, thereby bringing the hot portion 112 of the cutting tool, particularly its beak or tip 114, into contact with the lens capsule 24. touch. Tool 110 can generate a heat pulse at the tip or beak 114, and an electrical pulse through tool 110 can form an opening O( image 3 ). The heat pulse is focused on the tip or beak 114 , an effect due to the configuration of the slot 116 in the thermal portion 112 . Next, with the opening O formed in the lens capsule 24, the thermal cutting tool 110 is moved out of position in the direction of the double-headed arrow 117...

Abstract

There are disclosed methods and apparatus for surgical removal of encapsulated tissue, and in particular removal of cataracts from lens capsules. These methods involve accessing the tissue in the capsule and maintaining control on the capsule, by gripping the capsule with an apparatus, a portion of which has been cooled, this cooling providing chilling to the apparatus portion and capsule, such that the apparatus portion adheres to the capsule by freezing. The apparatus is also heated, to limit any backwards conduction of the cooling, toward the remainder of the apparatus, with this heating keeping the apparatus at temperatures within a biocompatible range.
