[0020] refer to figure 1 , figure 1 A front view of the MRI magnet assembly 10 is shown. The MRI magnet assembly 10 includes opposing magnetic field generating assemblies 12 that generate a magnetic field within an air gap 14 formed between the assemblies 12 . A plurality of shims 18 are provided on each opposing surface 16 of the magnetic field generating assembly 12, the shims 18 being arranged to correct inhomogeneities in the magnetic field. The magnetic field generating assembly 12 may be connected by one or more yokes or support members (not shown).

[0021] The magnetic field generating assembly 12 may comprise any type of arrangement for generating a magnetic field within an air gap 14 where opposing surfaces 16 are arranged to accommodate shims 18 for correcting inhomogeneities in the magnetic field. For example, each magnetic field generating assembly 12 may include a magnetic pole piece 20 fixed to one or more magnetic field generating elements 22 and a gradient ...

Abstract

Described herein is a method and system for shimming an MRI magnetic field generating assembly (12), wherein a plurality of shims (18) are secured relative to a surface (16) of the magnetic field generating assembly (12) to at least partially correct inhomogeneities in the magnetic field generated by the magnetic field generating assembly (12). In one aspect, the shims are arranged along a plurality of concentric geometric shapes each having at least five sides. In an alternative aspect, the shims are arranged in a plurality of rows and columns, where the rows are normal to the columns. In another aspect, at least one of the shims is a flat plate of magnetic material including a top edge (80), a bottom edge (82), side edges (84), (86), and face surfaces (88), (90). The bottom edge (82) is the proximal portion of the flat plate relative to the magnetic field generating assembly (12), the top edge (80) is the distal portion of the flat plate relative to the magnetic field generating assembly (12), and the face surfaces (88), (90) are aligned with a direction of the magnetic field generated by the magnetic field generating assembly (12).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to magnetic field adjustment systems. More specifically, the present invention relates to magnetic field adjustment systems for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnet assemblies. Background technique [0002] MRI magnet assemblies require an air gap large enough to accommodate all or part of the object being scanned, and the MRI magnet typically requires a strong and uniform magnetic field exhibiting an accuracy level in the defined imaging space within the air gap of Ten parts per million (ppm). [0003] One known configuration of an MRI magnet assembly is the so-called open structure MRI. Typically, open structure MRIs contain opposing magnetic field generating assemblies interconnected by one or more yoke or support members. Another known configuration is the so-called cylindrical structure MRI in which the magnetic field generating assembly and other magnetic field shaping components are arranged around a cylindric...
