Problems solved by technology

Since skipping fixed time intervals is usually fast and easy to perform with a PVR, the visual interruption of the program is kept short
[0003] However, if the user uses a stand-alone personal video recorder that records the signal from an external source, unintentional changes in the source channel remain undetected during time-shifted mode until the user reaches the point in the recording where the channel change occurs

Embodiment Construction

[0011] A timing diagram with two horizontal time bars is shown in the figure. The upper time bar represents the transmission of the program to be recorded. The program starts at time t1 and continues to times not shown in the figure. The lower horizontal bar represents the reproduction of the recorded program. Reproduction starts at time t1'. During the transmission of the recorded program an error occurs at time t2. Errors or corruption are represented by the black lightning bolt symbol. Reproduction starts after a delay of t1'-t1. If the user is not notified of the occurrence of the error or corruption, the time period t2'-t2 will elapse before the error or corruption is reproduced. According to the invention, the state of the source signal is monitored for errors or corruption. At the moment an error or corruption is detected, a message is sent. The sending of a message is shown in the drawing as a message frame 1 which is overlaid on the reproduced image on the scre...

Abstract

A method is suggested for detecting a change in the status of a data source the signal of which is recorded beginning at a first time and reproduced beginning at a second time which is later than the first time. In order to prematurely inform a user about unwanted changes in the data stream originating from the data source while reproducing recorded content, the signal to be recorded from the source is permanently monitored for properties indicating an unchanged data stream. Upon detecting a change in the data stream the user is informed, e.g., via an on-screen-display. A menu offering options for further operation or correcting a possible fault is provided to the user. Further a device incorporating the method is suggested.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method for detecting a source state change in an apparatus for recording and reproducing a data stream. In particular, the inventive method relates to a device for recording and reproducing radio and / or television signals. Background technique [0002] A device used to record streaming data, such as a radio or television signal, is called a video tape recorder, or VCR. Traditional video recorders use a tape-like device to sequentially record radio or television signals. More recent developments in storage technology have proposed recording and reproducing devices that allow simultaneous recording and reproduction of recorded content. These new devices are also often referred to as PVRs -- an acronym for Personal Video Recorder. These PVRs can be used in a conventional manner to record radio or television programs and to reproduce the recorded programs at any time after the termination of the recording. PVRs can al...
