Embodiment Construction

[0031] The present invention provides mechanisms for ensuring file system integrity during backup operations. More specifically, the present invention provides mechanisms for ensuring that a file system's metadata is consistent with the state of the storage system and the backed up metadata during a backup operation so that a journaled or journaled file system can remain valid. The mechanisms of the present invention can be used in a distributed data processing system or in individual computing devices. Therefore, for the convenience of describing the operating components of the present invention, the distributed data processing system and the individual data processing system are briefly described below with reference to FIGS. 2-5.

[0032] Referring now to the drawings, Figure 2 is a schematic representation of a network of distributed data processing systems in which the present invention may be implemented. Network data processing system 200 is a network of computers in w...

Abstract

A method and apparatus for ensuring valid journaling file system metadata during backup operations provides a mechanism for suspending write I / O operations to a storage device during point-in-time backup operations. After the real-time point backup operation is completed, the pending write I / O operation is released, and then processed by the storage system. Sets the point-in-time backup flag in the Logical Volume Manager when initiating a point-in-time operation. When receiving a write I / O operation, the logical volume manager checks the status of the real-time point backup flag to determine whether the real-time point backup operation is currently being performed. If the flag is not set, write I / O operations are logged and performed as normal. If the flag is set, write I / O operations are stored in the holding queue of the logical volume manager. When a write I / O is stored in the holding queue, it is not allowed to be sent to the storage system. When the real-time point backup operation is completed, the pending write I / O operations in the holding queue are allowed to be sent to the storage system, and the metadata for the file system is updated to reflect the submission of the write I / O operations.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an improved method of implementing backup operations in computing systems having journaled or logged file systems. More specifically, the present invention provides methods and apparatus for ensuring the validity of journaled file system metadata during backup operations. Background technique [0002] Virtually all computer applications (or programs) rely on storage devices. The storage device may be used for storing computer code and for storing data operated on by the code. The term "data" refers to any information, including formatted information, executable code, and data used for the operation of an application. Storage technology has evolved in many different directions. Accordingly, a wide variety of storage systems are available. [0003] Due to the wide variety of storage systems available, it is not practical for humans to write computer applications and have detailed control over how data is stored on sto...
