Problems solved by technology

In a vertical crankshaft engine, at least some of these bearings are located near the top of the engine, so the oil must be conveyed up into these components, typically through passages in the crankcase, usually in the crankcase at made by drilling or casting lines, although these passages are sufficient to carry the oil where it is needed in the crankcase, drilling or casting these passages is usually expensive to implement

Embodiment Construction

[0027] refer to figure 1 and Fig. 2, a novel single cylinder 4-stroke internal combustion engine 100 designed by Kohler Company of Kohler, Wisconsin includes a crankcase 110 and a blower housing 120 in which a fan 130 and a flywheel 140 are located. The engine 100 also includes a starter 150 , a cylinder 160 , a cylinder head 170 and a rocker cover 180 . Connected to the cylinder head 170 is as figure 1 Exhaust port 190 is shown and intake port 200 is shown in FIG. 2 . It is known from the prior art that when the engine 100 is running, the piston 210 (see Figure 7 ) in the cylinder 160 towards and away from the cylinder head 170 for back and forth movement, the movement of the piston 210 in turn causes the crankshaft 220 (see Figure 7 ) rotates, and causes the fan 130 and the flywheel 140 connected to the crankshaft 220 to rotate, the rotation of the fan 130 cools the engine, and the rotation of the flywheel 140 maintains a relatively constant rotational momentum.

Abstract

A crankcase and method of assembling a crankcase, of an internal combustion engine are disclosed. The crankcase includes a top including at least a first portion of a top surface of the crankcase, and a bottom including a bottom surface of the crankcase and a plurality of side surfaces of the crankcase. The side surfaces are substantially vertical and extend between the top and bottom surfaces. The crankcase further includes bearings within at least one of the top and bottom to support a crankshaft. The crankcase additionally includes a first interface at which at least one of the top, bottom and side surfaces is coupled to a cylinder. The bottom and top interface one another along a split line, the top is removable from the bottom, and the top is configured to be attached to at least one of an oil filter component, a starter, and an ignition module.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to internal combustion engines, and more particularly the invention relates to crankcases for vertical cylinder internal combustion engines which are used in lawnmowers and various other machines. Background technique [0002] Many internal combustion engines, especially many single-cylinder internal combustion engines, generally employ a crankcase with a base or floor that is removable from the rest of the respective crankcase. In vertical crankshaft engines of this type, each top surface of the crankcase and The bottom surface has engine crankshaft bearings, and the detachable bottom surface generally acts as an oil pan or collection bin to collect lubricating oil in the crankcase. [0003] Although this approach is widely used, there are still certain limitations in such a crankcase design. The demarcation line of the crankcase is located between the side walls and the floor of the crankcase, at a lower level generally below ...
