Embodiment Construction

[0033] Like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the drawings. The illustrations given herein exemplarily describe preferred embodiments of the invention, and these illustrations should not be construed in any way as limiting the scope of the invention.

[0034] First refer to figure 1 and 2 , shows an exemplary reel 20 according to the present invention in the form of a hose reel. Although reel 20 is described below as a hose reel for storing hose 26, it should be understood that reel 20 according to the present invention may also be used for wire, cord, cable or other elongate thing. The hose reel 20 generally includes a base assembly 22 and a spool assembly 24 rotatably mounted on the base assembly 22 and holding a hose 26 or other elongate item wound thereon.

[0035] refer to image 3The base assembly 22 generally includes a base frame 28 formed from a plurality of frame members 30 interconnected as described below. The frame part 30 may be formed as an...

Abstract

A reel (20), such as a hose reel, which includes a modular base assembly (22) and a modular spool assembly (24). The base assembly includes a frame (28) which is formed by a plurality of extruded frame components (30a, 30b, 30c) joined to one another by connecting members (44). The lengths of the frame components may be easily varied in order to in turn vary the overall height (H), width (W), and depth (D) dimensions of the frame of the base assembly. The spool assembly includes a pair of side walls (80) joined to one another by a plurality of spacer members (82). The length of the spacer members may be varied to in turn vary the width of the spool assembly. In one embodiment, the base assembly frame components and the spacer members are aluminum extrusions which are each cut to a selected length. In this manner, the width, depth, and height of the frame of the base assembly and the width of the spool assembly may be selectively varied to easily custom manufacture different reels having different overall sizes.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to reels for storing hoses, wires, ropes, cables or other items. In particular, the present invention relates to reels comprising a modular base assembly and a modular mandrel assembly. Background technique [0002] Reels are used to store elongated items such as hoses used to transport fluids including, for example, water, air, hydraulic fluid or grease. These hoses can be round or flat in shape and can also be used in vacuum applications to remove fluid or solid matter from a given location. Optionally, the reel may be used to store elongated items other than hoses, such as wires, ropes, cables or other items. [0003] Known reels generally include a base assembly and a mandrel assembly. In one known hose reel, for example, the base assembly includes a frame made of a number of different individually formed metal parts interconnected by threaded fasteners. These metal parts are usually formed through stamping and ben...
