Embodiments of the present invention can define an inter-eNB X2 message to exchange the needed information for eNBs to determine a muting pattern, for example. Based on the information received (related to a throughput gain), an eNB may decide whether to mute itself or not, as described in more detail below. When using a coordinated muting scheme, because information sent by a given eNB may be exaggerated for the benefit of the given eNB, in order to ensure that neighboring eNBs are properly muted, it may be necessary to test that the sent information is valid, as described in more detail below.
