An orthomode transducer (OMT) is a waveguide component. It is commonly referred to as a polarisation duplexer. Orthomode transducers serve either to combine or to separate two orthogonally polarized microwave signal paths. One of the paths forms the uplink, which is transmitted over the same waveguide as the received signal path, or downlink path. Such a device may be part of a VSAT antenna feed or a terrestrial microwave radio feed; for example, OMTs are often used with a feed horn to isolate orthogonal polarizations of a signal and to transfer transmit and receive signals to different ports.

A compact feed system (600) is provided which comprises an orthomode transducer or junction (400) and a waveguide H-plane directional coupler (100). The waveguide H-plane directional coupler may comprise two hollow waveguide sections (110, 120) and a coupling section (130) arranged in between the two hollow waveguide sections for coupling a signal from one hollow waveguide section to another hollow waveguide section. In a transverse cross-section of the waveguide H-plane directional coupler, the hollow waveguide sections may be angled towards the coupling section and delimit a recess (20) formed at an inner side of the waveguide H-plane directional coupler. The orthomode transducer or junction (400) may be positioned at least partially in the recess to increase compactness of the feed system.

A dual broad-band orthomode transducer includes a main body and a guiding structure. The main body defines a first waveguide channel for transmitting a low frequency band signal and second waveguide channel for transmitting a high frequency band signal, the top side of the main body is configured with a feed port for receiving an electromagnetic signal. The guiding structure is erected inside the main body and includes a central medium and a sleeve sheathed on the outer periphery of the central medium, the sleeve is connected to the first waveguide channel, and the central medium is connected to the second waveguide channel. The electromagnetic signal belonging to the low frequency band signal is transmitted to the first waveguide channel through the sleeve. The electromagnetic signal belonging to the high frequency band signal is transmitted to the second waveguide channel through the central medium, without requiring additional filters or multiplexers.

An add-on module enables a SATCOM system to selectively transmit and receive radar signals in addition to SATCOM signals. A circulator has a transmit / receive port and an input port for coupling respectively between a transmit / receive port of the SATCOM orthomode transducer and an output of the SATCOM transmitter amplifier. A low noise radar receiver amplifier has an input port coupled to the output port of the circulator and an output port coupled to the SATCOM receiver. The circulator operates within the frequency range of the SATCOM system and the radar signals, and directs amplified radar and SATCOM transmission signals to the antenna while bypassing the receiver and directs radar signals received from the antenna to the receiver while bypassing the transmitter. The receiver and the transmitter have selectable SATCOM and radar modes configured to transmit and receive at any given time either SATCOM signals or radar signals, respectively.

Extended band two-folded orthogonal mode microwave transducer devices and methods

Satellite networks play an important role in many applications due to their unique features of global coverage and mobility assistance. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites are currently gaining popularity in wireless communications as they will be heavily used in future wireless communication networks. To enable polarisation diversity, satellite systems commonly use dual-polarized antennas where orthomode transducers (OMTs) are employed in such systems to feed the antennas with the two orthogonal polarizations. An OMT should provide high impedance matching, high isolation levels between ports as well as being lightweight and compact. OMT designs are presented providing a bandwidth ratio of about 55% with good impedance matching and high isolation compatible with LEO satellite feeding structures in terms of thermal, power, and passive intermodulation analysis.
