Providing presence information in a communication network

A server (101) designates and assigns each of a plurality of communication devices to at least one of a plurality of groups. The server (101) prepares a communication having presence information corresponding to a status of the communication devices in the group; determines network infrastructure device(s) serving the group; and transmits, at a pre-determined time, the communication to the network infrastructure device(s). A network infrastructure device (103a-c, 105a-f) receives the communication and transmits, as a common channel signal during the pre-determined time, a signal with the presence information. A communication unit (107a, 107b, 107c) receives an indication of the pre-determined time; transmits, at an interval proximate to the pre-determined time, a signal indicating the communication device's status; and receives, at the pre-determined time, the signal with the presence information.

Rerouting in connection-oriented communication networks and communication systems

A Private Network-Network Interface (PNNI) network including interconnected nodes is defined as a single rerouting domain (“global domain”) and the global domain is further defined by multiple divided domains (“local domains”). Each of the local domains is defined to include multiple nodes that are included in the network. Connection recovery and path optimization in the global domain (the entire PNNI network) are performed in accordance with a global rerouting protocol. The global rerouting protocol is a modification of the standard Domain-Based Rerouting (DBR) protocol, by adding information elements of domain identifier, rerouting for the global domain. The DBR protocol does not support the connection recovery from a link failure between local domains (“inter-domains”) and the global path optimization. The global rerouting method is capable of connection recovery and path optimization outside of any rerouting local domains. The global rerouting provides double fault recovery within the rerouting domain (“intra-domain”) as covered by the DBR and outside of the domains (“inter-domain”) or when the initial fault recovery within the domain has failed. Also, the global rerouting method provides maximum path optimization across all domains and within the rerouting local domain.

Location-based identification for use in a communications network

A method and apparatus for implementing location-based identification in a communication network. The method comprises establishing a network connection between a host and a network, transmitting network data packets from the host through a connection port, transmitting data packets from the host through a location-specific connection port and identifying the port at an access concentrator in the form of a port identifier. The port identifier is then communicated to a network device, typically a gateway device, and stored in a database in communication with the network device. The method may include tagging the network packets at the access concentrator with a port identifier that corresponds to a media access control (MAC) address. The access concentrator and the network device will tag and communicate port numbers by assigning VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) identifiers to the ports.

Method and apparatus for establishing ad hoc communications pathways between source and destination nodes in a communications network

Autoband's distributed networking intelligence provides a novel architecture capable of dynamically reconfiguring communications pathways consisting of links whose transmission media are opportunistically and dynamically selectable. At least one constituent node in such automatically configurable transient pathways is mobile, for example, information (source) server, intervening router node(s), gateway server and / or client device. Additionally, Autoband's ad hoc communications pathways may seamlessly and dynamically integrate (i.e., “graft”) into standard fixed node networks such as terrestrial networks, other wireless networks or combinations thereof. These communications may consist of point-to-point or multicast links. An economic market-based approach further assures allocation of available network resources (i.e., bandwidth and processing) needed to achieve the most optimally resource efficient communications pathway configurations for the totality of communications. Consequently, optimal network resource allocation and efficiency at a system-wide level is continuously achieved.

Signalling method for communication networks, corresponding network, devices and computer program product

A method is proposed, for use e.g. in the context of WiMAX networks supporting the CMIPv6 function, for allowing the ASN-GW to become aware of the status of a control procedure, the CMIPv6 mobility binding procedure. The ASN-GW is not directly aware of its result since the procedure implies a message exchange at the U-Plane level, where the ASN-GW implements only a routing function. Nevertheless the ASN-GW needs to know the status of the procedure since it has to perform some subsequent actions depending on that status. The method includes signalling the status via a signalling mechanism between the Access Service Network and the Connectivity Service Network, thus avoiding packet inspection at the U-plane by the Access Service Network Gateway.

System and method for distributing information via a communication network

A communication system for distributing information via a network to one or more subscribers includes a multi-port switch, one or more radio frequency (RF) modems coupled to respective ports of the switch, a combiner and a transmitter. The switch forwards source information to the RF modems based on address information. Each RF modem modulates and up converts information from the switch to an RF signal within a respective subscriber channel of the television broadcast spectrum. Each channel is assigned to one or more subscribers, and each subscriber is allocated unshared bandwidth. Each channel may be further divided into unshared bandwidth increments, so that multiple subscribers may share a single channel. The combiner combines modulated information from each RF modem into a combined signal and the transmitter transmits the combined signal to the subscribers via the network. An HFC network including a distribution point and one or more optical nodes is contemplated, each optical node serving a particular geographic area via a corresponding coaxial cable. Each subscriber destination includes a gateway device or the like that is tuned to a corresponding channel to retrieve source information from that channel, and to deliver the information to one or more local subscriber devices. The gateway further includes converters, a modulator and an up converter to receive and transmit subscriber information upstream to the distribution point. Method for providing a buffer status report in a mobile communication network

A method for providing a buffer status report in a mobile communication network is implemented between a base station and a user equipment. When data arrives to buffers of the user equipment and the priority of a logical channel for the data is higher than those of other logical channels for existing data in the buffers, a short buffer status report associated with the buffer of a logical channel group corresponding to the arrival data is triggered. The user equipment is based on obtained resources allocated by the base station to fill all data of the buffer of the logical channel group in a Protocol Data Unit. If all data of the buffer of the logical channel group corresponding to the arrival data can be completely filled in the Protocol Data Unit, the short buffer status report is canceled. Otherwise, the user equipment transmits the short buffer status report.
