Print media catalog service

An automated utility for obtaining an identification of a new type of media from a user and searching remote databases to locate and retrieve properties of the new media to set appropriate printing parameters, including colorimetric parameters. To print on a new media, the user can enter a common identifier of the new media, or it can be automatically detected by the user's printer. Based on this information, remote databases can be searched to locate properties of the new media. The properties can be used to automatically set up an application or computer to use the new media on an intended printer. In addition, if no color profiles are found of the new media and the user's intended printer, a new color profile can be derived from pre-existing color profiles located in the remote databases. Starting with a similar color profile, a difference in colorimetric properties between the media of the similar color profile and the new media can be used to translate the similar color profile into a new color profile. To derive the new color profile for the new media with the intended printer, the colorimetric properties of the new media are substituted after the rest of the color profile has been translated.

Ink thickness variations for the control of control of color printers

The present invention proposes a method and a computing system for deducing ink thickness variations from spectral reflectance measurements performed on a printing press or on a printer. The computed ink thickness variations enable controlling the ink deposition and therefore the color accuracy, both in the case of high-speed printing presses and of network printers. Ink thickness variations are expressed as ink thickness variation factors incorporated into a spectral prediction model. The method for computing ink thickness variations comprises both calibration and ink thickness variation computation steps. The calibration steps comprise the calculation of ink transmittances from measured reflectances and the computation of possibly wavelength-dependent ink thicknesses of solid superposed inks. Wavelength-dependent ink thicknesses account for the scattering behavior of non-transparent inks or of inks partly entering into the paper bulk. The ink thickness variation factors are fitted by minimizing a distance metric between the reflection spectrum predicted according to the thickness variation enhanced spectral prediction model and the measured reflection spectrum. The ink thickness variation enhanced spectral prediction model can be applied both in the visible wavelength range and in the near-infrared wavelength range. This enables computing unambiguously the thickness variations of the cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks. Furthermore, a spectral reflection may be measured over a stripe of a printed page and used to predict the ink thickness variations occurring within that stripe. This enables the real-time control of the ink deposition process on a printing press.

Four-color light-emitting diode (LED) display sub-pixel restructuring method

The invention discloses a four-color light-emitting diode (LED) display sub-pixel restructuring method, and relates to an LED display. A single-frame high-resolution original image is sampled into a multi-frame image suitable for a low-resolution LED display through a pixel sampling algorithm aiming at three different LED display pixel structures of vertical stripes of red, green, blue and white (RGBW), a chessboard structure and a grid, and the image is displayed on the LED display. The brightness value shared by the RGB is replaced with a white LED by transforming the RGB color components of the separated low-resolution image into the luminance components of RGBW LED. The traditional pixel of the LED display is divided into single LED by using an LED display pixel restructuring technology, and adjacent LEDs of different pixels are restructured to form a new visual pixel. One-one mapping is carried out to each low-resolution image and the pixels of the LED with sub-pixels restructured, and the multi-frame low-resolution image is displayed in a mode of time division multiplexing.

Color characterization of a high dynamic range (HDR) image capture device is provided. Color checker image data of a color checker at multiple exposures is obtained. Color values for neutral patches and exposure values are extracted. A colorimetrically accurate response curve is determined based on the neutral patch color values and the exposure values. An optimized transformation associated with the device is derived through gamma curve compensation based on the neutral patch data and comparison of color values of the compensated image with known color values of the color checker. A calorimetrically accurate HDR image is generated from scene image data of a scene captured by the device at multiple exposures through extraction of exposure data, modification of color values based on the colorimetrically accurate response curve and the exposure data, averaging the modified color values, and transformation of the averaged color values based on the optimized transformation.

Replicated multi-channel sensors for decucing ink thicknesses in color printing devices

A method and computing system are proposed for deducing ink thickness variations from solid-state multi-sensor measurements performed online on a printing press or printer. The computed ink thickness variations enable controlling the ink deposition and therefore the color accuracy. Ink thickness variations are expressed as ink thickness variation factors incorporated into an ink thickness variation and sensor response enhanced spectral prediction model. The ink thickness variation computing system comprises multi-channel sensor devices (e.g. red, green, blue, near infra-red), a processing module, and a computing system. The multi-channel sensor devices are replicated over the width of the print sheet. Preferably embodied by Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs), due to their high-speed acquisition capabilities, they provide responses according to the reflectance of small area segments within a print sheet. The processing module accumulates the digital sensor responses and forwards them to the computing system, which deduces the ink thickness variations.

Device, system and method for electronic true color display

A device, system and a method for displaying an expanded gamut of colors. The present invention is suitable for various types of electronic display devices, such as televisions and monitor devices (“monitors”) for computational devices, for example. The present invention operates by electronic production of more than three primary colors. As previously described, the term “primary color” specifically does not include light as produced by a neutral filter. Thus, unlike background art systems and devices, the present invention is not limited to combinations of colors which are produced from only three primary colors, such as red, green and blue for example.

Calibration techniques for imaging devices

The invention is directed to various calibration techniques for calibrating an imagining device such as a display device, a printer, or a scanner. The techniques may involve characterizing the imaging device with a device model such that an average error between expected outputs determined from the device model and measured outputs of the imaging device is on the order of an expected error, and adjusting image rendering on the imaging device to achieve a target behavior. The invention can achieve a balance between analytical behavior of the imaging device and measured output. In this manner, adjustments to image rendering may be more likely to improve color accuracy and less likely to overcompensate for errors that are expected.
