Problems solved by technology

It is easy to understand that the above problem is even greater if the anti-aliasing scheme is to be used to produce moving images on devices with reduced computing power, such as mobile phones or PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants)

Embodiment Construction

[0021] FIG. 1 is a block diagram of an example of a system for drawing lines or polygons. A CPU (Central Processing Unit) 201 is connected to a memory 202 through a data bus 203 . Memory 202 includes application programs running on the system, such as computer games or CAD (Computer Aided Design) programs. Like most computer systems, CPU 201 fetches instructions from memory 202 and executes these instructions in order to perform certain tasks. Herein, the task of the CPU 201 is to provide the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) 204 with information on objects to be drawn on the display 205 . It is emphasized that the GPU 204 can be in the form of a processor, such as a DSP (Digital Signal Processor), or in the form of an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit), FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), hardwired logic, etc., or in the form of a CPU Execute on 201. The GPU 204 is also connected to the bus 203 , but the GPU 204 is also connected to the processor via a separate ...

Abstract

A sampling pattern covering an array of pixels for use in an anti-aliasing system is disclosed where each pixel has a pattern of sample points at the edges of the pixel. Moreover is the sample point pattern of each pixel a mirror image and different from the pattern of a directly neighboring pixel.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to graphics processing, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for producing high quality anti-aliased graphics images at low computational costs at high frame rates. Background technique [0002] Aliasing has been a problem when rendering still or moving images on a monitor since the early days of computer graphics. [0003] One way to prevent the low visual quality of jagged images is to use what is commonly known as supersampling. Supersampling will give good image quality, but it has the disadvantage of low frame rate due to heavy computational burden. More specifically, supersampling reproduces an image at a higher resolution than the final resolution displayed on the screen. This is achieved by rendering multiple sub-pixel samples for each pixel to be displayed, i.e. each pixel value will be a weighted sum of the sub-pixel sample values. For example, each displayed pixel may include a filtered we...
