Problems solved by technology

[0014] Existing technologies that employ control and forwarding plane redundancy often fail or only partially meet the above requirements
These techniques typically only use hardware redundancy, or do not support ongoing functional verification of standby forwarding plane elements, or do not support rapid switching of elements from standby to active roles, or require the system to be offline during standby verification
in addition, these techniques provide only limited assurance that the standby element is ready to assume the role of the active element
Therefore, it is often difficult, if not impossible, to achieve high system availability using these techniques

Embodiment Construction

[0030] 1 is a schematic block diagram of a computer network 100 comprising a collection of communication links and network segments connected to a plurality of nodes, such as end nodes 110 and intermediate nodes 150 . Network links and segments may include local area network (LAN) 120 and wide area network (WAN) links 130 interconnected by intermediate nodes 150, such as network switches or routers, to form an interconnected network of computer nodes. These Internet nodes communicate by exchanging data packets according to a set of predefined protocols, such as Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP).

[0031] To interconnect their dispersed private computer networks and / or provide Internet connectivity, many organizations rely on the infrastructure and facilities of Internet Service Providers (ISPs), rather than purchasing and configuring the necessary equipment themselves. In the illustrated embodiment, computer network 100 is organized into multiple domains...

Abstract

The present invention provides a technique for verifying an intermediate node that employs a forwarding plane and optionally a control plane. A test packet is generated and transferred to the forwarding plane. Using operational software and hardware, the forwarding plane forwards the test packet to a line card, which in turn ''loops'' the test packet back to the forwarding-plane. Using operational software and hardware, the forwarding plane processes the looped-back test packet including forwarding the packet to a destination, such as a control plane, where the looped-back test packet is verified.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to computer networks, and more specifically, the present invention relates to verifying the operation of intermediate nodes. Background technique [0002] A computer network is a geographically distributed collection of interconnected communication links and network segments used to transport data between nodes, such as computers. Many types of network segments are available, ranging in type from local area networks (LANs) to wide area networks (WANs). A LAN typically connects personal computers and workstations via dedicated private communication links located in the same common physical location, such as a building or campus. WANs, on the other hand, typically connect large numbers of geographically dispersed nodes via long-distance communication links, such as common carrier telephone lines. The Internet is an example of a WAN, which connects different networks throughout the world, providing global communic...
