Problems solved by technology

Among the transmission problems mentioned earlier, such as improper transmission discs, the choice of caster is limited
[0012] Nevertheless, the problem common to all the above-mentioned variators is to achieve the steering effect required to control the orientation of the rollers simply by displacing the carrier back and forth along the center circle of the torus cavity

Embodiment Construction

[0048] The embodiments of the invention to be described below all involve the mounting of each variator roller on a respective carrier which can be caused to tilt by means of a drive arrangement. This principle can be understood from Figures 6a and 6b, which show only one roller, referenced 200 (and which is largely contained within a shroud 202 which will description) and the carrier is labeled 204. Comparing Figure 6b with Figure 6a, the carrier 204 is tilted about the carrier axis 226 such that the tilt angle Θ is non-zero. The change in skew angle temporarily moves the roller axes away from intersection with the variator axis and the resulting steering moment causes the rollers to precess to return to intersection. The resulting inclination of the rollers corresponds to a changed transmission ratio, which is no longer 1:1.

[0049] The arrangement used in this and subsequent embodiments to mount the carrier 204 such that it can be tilted about the carrier axis 226 and to...

Abstract

A continuously variable ratio device ("transmission") is disclosed in which a pair of rotating raceways (252, 254) are mounted for rotation about a common transmission axis (218). The driving force is transmitted from one raceway to the other by at least one roller (200) moving on the raceway. The transmission ratio can be varied by means of the precession of the rollers about the precession axis (228). Precession causes a change in the angle between the roller axis and the transmission axis and a corresponding change in the transmission ratio. According to the invention, the roller (200) is coupled to the carrier (214) in a manner that allows precession of the roller relative to the carrier (214). The carrier itself is rotatable about a carrier axis (226) that is not parallel to the precession axis. Rotation of the carrier (214) about the carrier axis serves to change the orientation of the precession axis (228) and is accompanied by a change in the transmission ratio.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to rolling traction transmissions of the type that transmit drive from one raceway to another by means of one or more rollers whose orientation can be varied in response to changes in the transmission ratio. More specifically, the present invention relates to a novel mechanism for controlling the orientation of rollers. Background technique [0002] As used herein, the term "variator" refers to a transmission that provides continuously variable ratios. FIG. 1 shows, by way of example only and not limitation, some of the main components of a known rolling traction transmission 10 in which the driving force is transferred from the outer disc rollers by means of rollers 18 moving on the raceways in a highly simplified form. The tracks 12, 14 convey to the inner disc race 16 (or vice versa). Although only two rollers are shown in the figures, actual variators typically have a total of six such rollers, with three rollers in ...
