Embodiment Construction

[0025] 1 and 2 show a chain saw 10 that includes an example of a tensioning device retaining assembly 34 ( FIG. 1 ) that adjusts the tension of an endless cutting chain 18 on the chain saw in accordance with the present invention. The chainsaw 10 includes an engine chassis 14 (not shown), a clutch cover 30 and a guide bar 20 on the cutting chain 18 . It will be appreciated that the engine drive is connected to the drive wheel 16 on the engine drive shaft (FIG. 2). The drive wheel 16 engages the links of the cutting chain 18 and propels the chain in rotation about a guide bar 20 (FIG. 1).

[0026] The structure of the guide rod 20 includes: an elongated plate having a channel or groove 22 around the periphery of the guide rod, and an idler wheel (not shown) at the end where the connecting rods of the cutting chain 18 overlap with the guide rod 20. ). Parallel pins, or bolts, 24 and 26 are affixed to the chassis 14 and lie flat on a generally flat surface, which is generally h...

Abstract

A retaining assembly (34) is provided for a tensioning arrangement for adjusting the tension of the cutting chain (18) in a chain saw (10). The retaining assembly (34) includes a rotatable knob (35) that operates in conjunction with the chain saw's engine chassis (14), clutch cover (30), and guide bar (20) and is rotatable about an axis of rotation between a tightening position for holding the guide bar (20) in place and a loosening position enabling the guide bar (20) to be repositioned whereby the tension in the cutting chain (18) is adjusted. A locking mechanism is provided for locking and unlocking the knob (35) for rotational movement. When the locking mechanism is in a locking position, moveable engagement points (44) of the locking mechanism extended beyond the confines of the knob (35) and engage fixed engagement points (46). When the locking mechanism is in the unlocking position, the moveable engagement points (44), having moved inwardly of the confines of the knob (35), are disengaged from the fixed engagement points (46).

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a holding assembly of a tension device, which periodically adjusts the tension of an endless cutting chain on a chainsaw guide bar. Background technique [0002] Due to various factors, eventually, the cutting chain on the chain saw will slack on the chain saw guide bar after use, such as wear will cause the chain to elongate. There are several configurations of chainsaws and related methods for moving the guide bar longitudinally away from the drive wheel of the chainsaw to remove slack in the cutting chain so that the cutting chain has the desired tension. This ensures that the links of the cutting chain remain neatly arranged within the peripheral channel of the guide bar. [0003] A number of tensioning devices and related methods for adjusting the tension of the cutting chain on the guide bar are known. Typically a holding assembly is provided for the tensioning device. The retaining assembly holds the guide rod in plac...
