Embodiment Construction

[0068] As will be more fully described below: According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, there is provided an electrical circuit comprising a piezoelectric transformer 1, wherein the piezoelectric transformer 1 is operated at its natural (i.e. "resonant") frequency and the first characteristic (i.e. A transformer input signal of a second characteristic (ie, voltage, frequency, and current) is transformed into a transformer output signal of a second characteristic (ie, voltage, frequency, and current). The circuit is preferably powered by a DC power source, but may also be powered by a rectified AC power source, by applying a voltage of a first polarity to the driver (or "input") portion 1A of the piezoelectric transformer 1, followed by the piezoelectric Deformation of the input portion of the transformer 1, subsequent deformation of the driven (or "output") portion 1B of the mechanically bonded piezoelectric transformer, and subsequent generation of an outpu...

Abstract

The present invention provides a multilayer piezoelectric transformer that uses combined vibration modes for step-up voltage conversion applications. The input portion radially deformed by being polarized is bonded to the output portion by an adhesive or constraining layer. The deformation of the central surface of the input part is constrained by the bonded output layer or constraining layer. The output layer is bonded to the input layer or the constrained layer and radially deformed. The different degrees of freedom of motion between the layers create stress and strain gradients through the thickness, which lead to high shear forces along the input and output layers. The combined radial-shear mode deformation of the output section piezoelectrically produces an effective, stepped high output voltage.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a voltage converter having a multilayer piezoelectric ceramic. More specifically, the present invention relates to a multilayer piezoelectric transformer using combined resonant modes for step-up voltage conversion. Piezoelectric transformers can be used in circuits that provide electroluminescence (EL) backlighting. Background technique [0002] Wire-wound electromagnetic transformers have been used to generate high voltages in the internal power circuits of devices such as televisions or fluorescent lamp ballasts. This type of electromagnetic transformer takes the form of winding a conductor around a core made of a magnetic substance. It is extremely difficult to produce an electromagnetic transformer with a compact, slender shape and at the same time efficient, since many turns of conductor are required to achieve a high transformation factor. Further, considering high-frequency applications, electromagn...
