Problems solved by technology

[0007] However, due to the large difference in laser power employed within the optical head when writing to the disc to achieve the required marks and spaces, it has been found that, especially when the LPP is positioned adjacent to a long space characterized by low light reflectivity , the LPP signal cannot be easily detected during writing to the disk as such
[0008] Furthermore, it is considered that known signal processing methods will not be suitable for enhancing the detection of LPP signals, since the bandwidth of LPP signals is closely similar to that of the larger write signal pulses

Embodiment Construction

[0032] now turn to figure 1 , illustrates a cross section of a portion of an optical disc 10 to which data can be written and which includes a spiral groove 12 on which data marks 14 are written using an optical read / write head (not shown). The grooves 12 are separated by helical lands 16 . As can be seen, the upper edge of the land 16 is formed by means of a sinusoidal structure arranged to provide a so-called wobble signal detected by the optical read / write head. This wobble signal is used to aid in precise tracking of the optical read / write head, as is well known in the art, and therefore will not be described further here.

[0033] now turn to figure 2 , illustrates a scheme 22 forming part of an apparatus for writing data onto an optical disc.

[0034] Within this scheme, a pair of low pass filters 24, 26 are provided which are arranged to receive a high frequency crosstalk signal 28 and Push-pull signal 30.

Abstract

The invention provides for a method and apparatus for writing data to an optical disc and comprising recovering an output signal from optical reading head, scaling the said output signal responsive to secondary data derived from the disc by way of the optical reading head and deriving a LLP signal for use during recording to the disc from the said scaled output signal wherein the said scaling is arranged to increase the LLP signal when the LLP is identified as located adjacent a mark on the disc of low light reflectivity.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods and devices for writing data to optical discs. Background technique [0002] Optical discs, such as DVD-R and DVD-RW discs, in which information can be written and optionally rewritten when necessary, are becoming increasingly common as primary media for storing digital data. [0003] Such discs typically include microscopic spiral grooves arranged to provide a feedback signal to the optical writing unit of the optical disc drive to enable precise tracking during writing and reading data to and from the optical disc. [0004] Such grooves are typically formed using adjacent helical lands and grooves. Embossed microstructures in the form of land pre-pit (Land Pre-Pit) are usually provided in the lands of optical discs and are generally used to provide disc addressing information and associated auxiliary data. [0005] In current DVD-R and DVD-RW recording systems, the signal generated when the optical head enco...
