Embodiment Construction

[0043] Reference is now made to the embodiments illustrated in FIGS. 1-6, wherein like reference numerals are used to refer to like components throughout.

[0044] To reduce the lag between fuel supply and demand, fast evaporation during engine transients can be achieved by combining the use of heated capillary tubes with the functionality of conventional fuel injectors, as disclosed in the following patent application, titled U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 10 / 143,250, filed May 10, 2002, for "Fuel Injectors for Internal Combustion Engines," a continuation-in-part of Application Serial No. 10 / 143,250, entitled "Using Fuel System and Control Method for Internal Combustion Engine", U.S. Patent Application No. 10 / 284,180, filed October 31, 2002, by Linna et al., and a continuation-in-part of application Ser. Capillary Fuel Injectors with Metering Valves for Internal Combustion Engines," U.S. Patent Application No. 10 / 342,267, filed January 15, 2003 by Linna et al., and having...

Abstract

An apparatus and method for improving the transient response of a spark ignition fuel injected internal combustion engine are disclosed. This is achieved through the use of one or more novel capillary fuel injectors. These devices are point fuel injectors (700) modified by inserting one or more relatively small diameter tubular heated capillaries (712) between the fuel line and the conventional injector. Sufficient heating may develop such that flashing occurs as the fuel exits the injector. The heater is turned on using a control algorithm that may be based on exhaust oxygen concentration, engine load, and accelerator pedal position.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to transient fuel control apparatus and methods for internal combustion engines. Background technique [0002] Since the late 1970's, spark ignition (SI) automotive internal combustion engines have been converted to the absence of carburetors. A variety of fuel injection systems are employed to meet increasingly stringent pollution control demands. Currently, a multi-point sequential fuel injection (PFI) system is preferred. [0003] In a multipoint sequential fuel injection system, each cylinder is equipped with one or more fuel injectors. These fuel injectors are usually fully open solenoid valves in a nozzle that injects gasoline at selected points in time either behind one or more intake valves or against the wall of the intake port. Injection timing is typically adjusted to inject fuel (either onto the wall of the intake port or onto the intake valve) when the intake valve is closed. The amount of fuel sprayed fro...
