Embodiment Construction

[0029] Externalization of business rules and externalization of trigger points are well known techniques for programming application behavior. For example, U.S. Patent Application No. 09 / 956644, "System and Method for Using Externalized, Dynamically Configurable, Cacheable Trigger Points," filed September 20, 2001 by Degenaro et al., describes a A technique for utilizing trigger points in a logic flow, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. The general idea is to replace the logic normally embedded within the application with a trigger point that requests an external mechanism to perform the desired processing. The variability of such designed applications can then be easily and dynamically manipulated without changing the rules-driven application itself. The layout of the trigger points in the various layers of the application allows for a corresponding level of rule abstraction. The centralization of externalizable logic and data increases the potential...

Abstract

Techniques are provided for managing (1210) externalizable inference components. This technique allows dynamic construction of inferences from separate components, and allows externalization of data used to control dynamically constructable inferences. An important advantage achieved is the ability to synthesize and match various externalized inference components to form new inferences; in other words, to be able to derive new knowledge by combining (reusing) and practicing various components in new ways. Provides pluggable inference components that can be combined in many different ways to meet the needs of different applications. This allows inference components to be developed independently and be highly portable.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to software engineering, and more particularly to techniques for employing externalizable inferencing components, including specifying, applying, and managing externalizable inferencing components. Background technique [0002] Various schemes have been developed to externalize inferencing data. In U.S. Patent Application No. 5,136,523 to Landers, "System for Automatic and Transparent Mapping of Rules and Objects from a Fixed Database Management System within Forward or Backward Chaining Inference Loops," describes Object and rule data in the database. In US Patent Application No. 5,446,885 by Moore et al., "Event Driven Management Information System with Rule-Based Application Structure Stored in a Relational Database," reasoning information is also stored permanently. However, the prior art does not disclose the use of externalizable inference components. Contents of the invention [0003] According to one aspect of...
