The digital controller 20 senses the actual value of the output voltage at the terminal Vout through a current monitoring device, namely an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) 40 . It can be seen that in practical implementations the resolution of ADC 40 may be limited. It is known that four voltage levels, preferably arranged symmetrically around the desired output voltage, are sufficient to implement an automatic step-up / down converter. Therefore, these four voltage levels define two signal windows, a small signal window and a large signal window. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the small signal window is arranged at a symmetrical position with a distance of 5 mV from the desired output voltage. For large signal windows, a symmetrical level of 20mV is sufficient.
