Embodiment Construction

[0033] The gas dispenser will be exemplarily described with reference to a drug delivery system. However, it should be considered that the use of the gas distributors described herein will be equally beneficial for industrial applications requiring high purity distribution gases, and for specific uses. The gas distributor 10 shown in FIG. 1 includes a first housing part 15 partially mounted within a second housing part 20 . The second housing part is provided with a plurality of retaining members 25, as shown more clearly in FIG. The body portions rotate relative to each other about a common axis. The second housing portion 20 is configured such that it is removably fixedly attached to a delivery system (not shown). In FIG. 1 , this connection means 30 is exemplified by a notch formed to cooperate with a snap-fit fitting formed on a mating part of the delivery system. Alternatively, matable threads may be provided on the gas distributor and delivery system, enabling a thr...

Abstract

A gas dispenser (10) for releasing gas from a capsule (40) of the type having a body (42) and a frangible stem (44) to a delivery system is provided. The dispenser comprises a first housing portion (15) for receiving the body of a capsule and a second housing portion (20) for connecting the first housing portion to the delivery system. The first housing portion comprises a cavity (47) for receiving the stem of a capsule received by the second housing portion. At least one of the housing portions are movable relative to the other, this relative motion causes a shearing force to be applied to the capsule to cause rupture of the capsule such that a gas is released from the capsule.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of gas dispensers, in particular gas dispensers for releasing gas from a capsule having a body and a frangible handle therefrom. Background technique [0002] A gas balloon as described above is known from the needle-free drug delivery system described in EP0757202. The capsule of such a system is ruptured to release the gas contained therein. This gas is then used as a propellant for the doses of medication that will be delivered and driven through the patient's skin. [0003] Gas dispensers incorporated in known drug delivery systems typically comprise a volume in which a gas capsule is positioned. This volume is increased due to the provision of a gas passage from the location of capsule rupture to the outlet of the dispenser. Alternatively, or in addition to this gas passage, operation of the gas distributor may involve movement of the gas capsule relative to the unit containing the capsule, such that t...
