Abstract

The present invention discloses a method, system, and gateway for automatically establishing a redirector for Domain Name System (DNS) name requests. A DNS setup packet is sent to the remote gateway via a virtual private network (VPN) tunnel. The setup packet includes the global name of the home network and the private address of the DNS server in the home network. A DNS setup reply packet is received from the remote gateway via the tunnel. The response packet includes the global name of the other home network and the private address of the DNS server in the other home network. In accordance with said DNS setup reply packet, an Application Level Gateway (DNS-ALG) of a DNS server in the home network is configured to redirect DNS name requests for another network's global name to a DNS server in the other network.
