Embodiment Construction

[0018] The following description is merely exemplary in nature and is not intended to limit the invention and its uses.

[0019] Figure 1 shows a transmission assembly 10 designed in accordance with the principles of the present invention. Transmission assembly 10 is described as a rear wheel drive transmission, however, various other types of transmissions could be used. The transmission assembly 10 generally includes a gear assembly 12 , a stationary member 14 , an outer brake 16 and an input shaft 18 . Input shaft 18 is driven by an engine (not shown). Other components commonly found in transmission assemblies, such as a torque converter or output shaft, may also be included without departing from the scope of the present invention.

[0020] The gear assembly 12 includes a clutch housing 20 disposed about and enclosing a gear arrangement 22 . The clutch housing 20 is usually fixed to an external frame, such as the frame of a motor vehicle (not shown). The clutch housing...

Abstract

The present invention provides a transmission assembly having a clutch housing, a gear arrangement disposed within the clutch housing, and a fixed component coupled to the clutch housing. A brake having a housing and a hub is also included. The housing is coupled to the fixed component and the hub is coupled to the gear arrangement. The brake is disposed external to the clutch housing and cooperates with the gear arrangement to provide at least one forward or reverse gear ratio.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to transmissions, and more particularly to a transmission assembly having a torque transmitting device. Background technique [0002] The statements in this section merely provide background information related to this invention and may not necessarily constitute prior art. [0003] Transmission assemblies typically include a plurality of torque-transmitting devices coupled with a plurality of gear sets. The torque transmitting devices cooperate with the gear sets to provide various forward and reverse gear ratios. A particular gear ratio may be selected by actuating a particular combination of torque transmitting devices. [0004] It is well known in the art that the number of ratios of an existing gear assembly can be increased by adding torque transmitting devices. However, it can be difficult to add a torque transmitting device to an existing transmission without making modifications to the transmission housing and ...
