Embodiment Construction

[0029] One embodiment of the present invention aims at reducing the computational complexity of the search process in a copy-controlled watermark detection scheme. This is an advantageous embodiment because the copy-controlling watermark detector is subject to strict complexity requirements. However, the invention is also applicable to other types of watermark detection schemes.

[0030] figure 1 One embodiment of a scheme for searching for a watermark in a data signal is shown, figure 1 The scheme of can be implemented in the copy-control watermark detector according to the present invention. The watermark detector may be part of a user playback device, such as a DVD player or any other type of player.

[0031] An attacker can prevent watermark detection that limits the watermark by changing the ratio of the signal content (e.g. resizing). A scale change of ±5% may be imperceptible to the end user, and an attacker could try to change the scale within that interval. Searc...

Abstract

The invention relates to a method of searching for a watermark in a data signal, and to a watermark detector, such as a copy-control watermark detector. The search is conducted in order to find a watermark in content which possibly has been attacked and / or altered. The search is conducted by the steps of determining or setting a search space for the data signal, selecting a subspace of the search space, and searching for the presence of the watermark in the subspace. The subspace may be selected from a multitude of regions, the selection e.g. being based on a deterministic or probabilistic function.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method of searching for a watermark in a data signal, and to a watermark detector, such as a copy-control watermark detector. Furthermore, the invention relates to computer readable codes. Background technique [0002] Illegal copies of digital content, such as audiovisual content, are becoming a growing problem for content owners and many strategies are implemented to discourage the distribution of illegal digital content. One possible strategy is to equip the playback device (player) with a copy-control watermark detector capable of identifying watermarked content and restricting the set of available actions (eg playback) according to the watermark payload. Before (or during) playback, the player checks the content of the watermark and refuses to play (or stops playing), eg, depending on the presence of the watermark and / or the content of the payload. For example, content marked "Theatrical Only" will not play on home sys...
