Embodiment Construction

[0010] figure 1 A flowchart 20 is included outlining an exemplary method for reducing peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) when using composite signals in communications. The example begins at 22 where peaks in the composite signal are identified. In one example, this occurs in an oversampled domain that approximates an analog signal, since the amplifier using the synthesized signal has an analog waveform.

[0011] At 24, the contribution of each user of the composite signal to the identified peak is determined. At 26, the groups of subcarriers used by each user and the modulation scheme used on each group of subcarriers are determined. In most cases, this information is already known by the communication system that is using the composite signal.

[0012] At 28, for at least one user, a PAPR reduction method is selected. In most cases, multiple users will contribute to the peak of the composite signal such that the PAPR reduction method will be useful for each corresponding...

Abstract

The invention relates to a method of reducing peak to average power ratio (PAPR) including selecting a PAPR reduction method dependent on a modulation scheme used for a set of sub-carriers. One type of modulation scheme is more suitable for at least one possible PAPR reduction method while another modulation scheme is more suitable for a different PAPR reduction method. Disclosed examples apply adifferent PAPR reduction technique to accommodate differing features of different modulation schemes.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to communications. More specifically, the present invention relates to power control in communications. Background technique [0002] Wireless and wired communication systems are well known and widely used. There are various challenges associated with facilitating successful and reliable communications. One of them is managing power levels. [0003] Multicarrier transmission is commonly used in wired and wireless applications, for example, Discrete Multitone Transmission (DMT) for Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology and Orthogonal for WLAN, WiMAX, DVB or future E-UTRA wireless communication standards Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). The main disadvantage of multicarrier transmission is the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmitted signal. A high PAPR requires the high power amplifier to back off from maximum power so that the operation of the power amplifier remains approximately...
