This will cause decoding drift, which combined with the use of lower quality intra frames produces a reduced user-perceived quality of the displayed multimedia
In addition, STBs must perform extensive data management due to the parallel reception and processing of regular and zapping streams

[0031] Throughout the drawings, the same reference numerals will be used for corresponding or similar elements.

[0032] In general, the present invention relates to multimedia provisioning and multimedia session management in multicast or broadcast based transport networks. In particular, the present invention will achieve a reduction in user-perceived delay time in conjunction with establishing a multimedia session and / or switching between different multicast media channels.

[0033] Media or multimedia data according to the present invention includes any form and type of media that can be presented and displayed at a user terminal. This includes, but is not limited to, images, video, audio, and other media types that can be perceived by a user during presentation. A media channel according to the invention is a multicast channel, which may, for example, carry "live" media or consist of pre-recorded content comprising one or more clips.

Abstract

A multimedia provider (100) multicasts a main multimedia stream (10) comprising a mixture of intra (12) and inter frames (14, 16, 18) and multicasts an associated auxiliary stream (20) comprising intra frames (22, 24). At least a portion of the intra frames (24) in the auxiliary stream (20) are generated based on same multimedia data as at least a portion of the inter frames (14) of the main stream (10). The provider (100) also transmits a stream information channel (30) comprising information (32, 34) descriptive of time instances of intra frames (12; 22, 24) in the main (10) and auxiliary (20) streams. This information (32, 34) allows a set top box (200) to selectively connect, in connection with session set-up and channel switch, to the main (10) or auxiliary (20) stream to receive an intra frame (12; 22, 24) with as a low delay as possible.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to multimedia management and, in particular, to techniques for reducing user perception time when connecting to a new multicast multimedia channel or switching between multicast multimedia channels. Background technique [0002] IPTV is the term used for the delivery of broadcast TV services over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, typically broadband access networks. The mainstream IPTV service is broadcast TV, where regular non-IPTV channels as well as additional channels with low penetration are delivered from the super head-end to the end-user's set-top box (STB) over the broadband network. In order to minimize the bandwidth required for these transmissions, it is recommended to use multicasting over the network. When the user switches channels, the STB sends an Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) message to leave (leave) the current channel and join a new channel. [0003] The multicast group the STB jo...
